What if I forget everything before the exam?

A student asked us what would happen if he forgot everything before the exam. It is one of the best questions we are asked, and the honest answer changes how he should spend every revision session between now and then.

A student asked us what would happen if he forgot everything before the exam. It is one of the best questions we are asked, and the honest answer changes how he should spend every revision session between now and then.

A student asked us this last week, and it is one of the best questions we get.

He had done the work. He could feel himself getting better. And he had worked out that there were still months between now and the exam, which meant months in which everything he had built could quietly drain away.

The honest answer starts with the uncomfortable half. Some of it will drain away. Forgetting is what memory does, to everybody, all the time, and it does not mean anything has gone wrong.

The useful half of the answer is that forgetting is not random, and the thing that decides what stays is not the thing most students think it is.

You remember what you thought about

The clearest statement of this comes from Daniel Willingham, a cognitive scientist who wrote a book about why students forget what they are taught. His summary of it is one line: memory is the residue of thought.[1]

In plain terms: the things that stay in your memory are the things you actually thought hard about. Not the things you looked at. Not the things that were explained to you. The things your own mind did work on.

Willingham puts the teaching version of it this way. A teacher must pay careful attention to what a task will actually make students think about, rather than what the teacher hopes they will think about. What they think about is what they will remember.[1]

This idea has a long research history behind it. In 1972 two psychologists, Fergus Craik and Robert Lockhart, proposed that how well something is remembered depends on how deeply it was processed.[2] Material handled at a shallow level fades. Material that the mind has had to work on stays.

Once you accept that, a lot of student behaviour starts to look different.

Reading over your notes feels like revision, and it is possible to read a whole page while thinking about almost nothing. Highlighting feels productive, and the thinking involved is mostly about which sentence looks important. Watching someone explain a topic can be genuinely useful, and it is also perfectly possible to watch the whole thing and never once be forced to produce an idea of your own.

None of these are wicked. They are just thin. The residue they leave behind is thin too.

So the real question changes shape. It stops being how do I stop forgetting, and becomes which activity forces me to think hard enough that something is left behind.

Which is where writing comes in

This is why writing is the centre of our programme, rather than one activity among several.

You cannot write a paragraph of analysis without thinking. The act itself will not let you. You have to decide what your point is, find the evidence for it, work out what the writer was doing, and put it into sentences that hold together. Every one of those steps is thought, and thought is what leaves residue.

That is not only our opinion. A meta-analysis published in 2020 gathered 56 experiments in which students wrote about the content they were studying, across science, social studies and mathematics. Writing about the material “reliably enhanced learning”, with an effect size of 0.30, and it worked just as well for secondary-age students as for younger ones.[3]

One detail in that study is worth pausing on. The benefit was not moderated by the features of the writing activity.[3] The particular format mattered much less than the fact that writing was happening at all.

The part where we have to be careful

There is a version of this argument that goes: writing helps, so write more, so a bigger target must be better. We are not going to make that argument, because the research does not support it.

An earlier meta-analysis, covering 48 school writing programmes, found the overall benefit to be real but small. More importantly, it found what made the difference. Two things predicted a stronger effect: the use of prompts that made students think about their own thinking, and programmes that ran for longer periods of time. Two things predicted a weaker effect: one particular age band, and longer writing assignments.[4]

Read those last two together. Sustained practice over months helped. Bigger individual pieces did not.

So when we ask students to aim at around a thousand words a week, and when we track it, the target is doing one job only: it makes writing a weekly habit rather than an occasional event. It is a rhythm, not a quantity. The thousandth word does not teach more than the nine hundredth.

What the same research says genuinely amplifies the effect is being prompted to think about the quality of your own work. That is precisely what marking is for. Every piece our students write comes back marked against the criteria an examiner actually uses, which forces a second round of thinking about work they have already done. The weekly two-hour writing session provides the rhythm. The marking provides the depth.

Your own model answers

There is a second thing that happens quietly on our programme, while a student writes every week.

Every assessment a Sophicly student writes is marked, and every one that earns a grade 7 or above is kept automatically in their portfolio — a collection of their own best work inside their Sophicly dashboard. Nobody has to remember to save it. By the time the exams arrive, they are revising from strong answers they wrote themselves, rather than from a book of model answers written by somebody else.

That difference is measurable. In a well-known 1978 experiment, psychologists Norman Slamecka and Peter Graf established what is now called the generation effect: material a person produces themselves is remembered better than the same material simply read.[5] A model answer written by a stranger is something you read. A model answer you wrote is something you generated.

One warning, because it decides whether the portfolio is worth anything.

Reading through your own good work is still reading, and reading over material is one of the weakest ways to revise. To get the benefit, the portfolio has to be used actively: take the question again, write the answer again from memory, and only then compare it with the version you wrote before. Used that way, a student has both a memory test and a personal mark scheme built out of their own best work. Used as something to read, it is just a nicer-looking version of a habit that does not work.

And about that mock

Which brings us back to where students usually panic.

A mock exam in December is a snapshot of how much you can produce on one morning, months before you have finished learning the subject. It is not a prediction. We have written about this at length elsewhere, because it is the single most common reason a family changes course at exactly the wrong moment.

We have had students walk into the real exam with a grade 5 in their mocks and walk out with a grade 9. That does not happen because they got lucky. It happens because the mock came in the middle of the process rather than at the end of it, and because they kept writing after it.

The actual answer to the question

So, to the student who asked.

You will forget some of it. Everybody does, and the plan already assumes it. What you will not lose is the part you built by thinking: the essays you argued your way through, the feedback you acted on, the paragraphs you rewrote until they worked. That was never stored as a fact to be remembered. It was practised into a skill.

The risk is not that you will forget what you learned. It is that you spent a year on activities that never made you think hard enough for there to be anything to forget.
